DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a heat-transfer method that prints your design onto a special film, then presses it onto fabric. It produces vibrant, full-color, durable labels and graphics that work on almost any material — cotton, polyester, blends, and more — including dark garments.
What is DTF?
With DTF, artwork is printed onto a clear film with a white underbase, coated with adhesive powder, then heat-pressed onto the garment. The white underbase is what lets DTF show bright, opaque color even on dark or colored fabrics — something sublimation can’t do.
Why choose DTF labels & transfers
- Unlimited full color — gradients, photos, and fine detail reproduce beautifully.
- Works on any fabric — cotton, poly, blends, nylon, and dark colors.
- Soft and flexible — stretches with the garment and feels lighter than thick prints.
- Durable — resists cracking and fading through washing when applied correctly.
- Great for tagless neck prints (logo + size + care in one) and external graphics.
DTF vs. other methods
| Method | Color | Works on dark fabric? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | Full color | Yes | Detailed color art, any fabric |
| Sublimation | Full color | No (light poly only) | Polyester, light colors |
| Screen print | Few solid colors | Yes | Bold simple logos, big runs |
| Heat-seal / tagless | Varies | Yes | Soft tagless neck labels |
Applying DTF transfers
DTF transfers are heat-pressed: position the transfer, press at the recommended temperature and time, let it cool, then peel the film. The process is similar to other heat transfers — see how to apply iron-on labels for the general technique.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DTF label?
A label or graphic printed with Direct-to-Film technology, heat-pressed onto a garment. It delivers full-color, durable results on virtually any fabric, including dark colors.
Is DTF better than sublimation?
DTF works on any fabric and any color; sublimation only works on light polyester. For dark or cotton garments, DTF is the better choice; for light polyester, sublimation gives an ultra-soft result.
Are DTF transfers durable?
Yes — applied correctly, DTF resists cracking and fading through many washes. Wash inside-out in cool water to extend life.
