Sublimation labels (dye-sublimated labels) use heat to infuse dye directly into a polyester-based material, producing vibrant, full-color, photo-quality labels. If your design has gradients, many colors, or fine detail, sublimation is one of the best ways to reproduce it.
How sublimation works
In dye sublimation, your artwork is printed and then heat-transferred so the dye turns to gas and bonds into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top. The result is a smooth, soft label with color that won’t crack or peel and stays bright wash after wash.
Why choose sublimation labels
- Unlimited colors and gradients — ideal for complex or photographic artwork.
- Fine detail and small text reproduce cleanly.
- Soft hand — the design is in the fabric, so there’s no heavy ink layer.
- Durable color that resists fading.
Sublimation vs. other printed labels
Standard printed labels and screen-printed labels apply ink on top of the material and are great for solid colors. Sublimation shines when you need many colors, gradients, or detail. One limitation: sublimation works best on light/white polyester bases, so it isn’t suited to dark backgrounds or natural cotton. Compare options in our printed label materials guide and woven vs. printed.
Best uses
- Colorful brand or care labels with detailed artwork
- Activewear and performance apparel (polyester-friendly)
- Labels featuring photos, gradients, or intricate patterns
Frequently asked questions
What are sublimation labels?
Labels made by dye-sublimation, where color is infused into a polyester material with heat for vibrant, full-color, durable results with a soft feel.
Are sublimated labels durable?
Yes — because the dye bonds into the fabric, the design won’t crack or peel and resists fading through washing.
Can sublimation print on dark or cotton labels?
Sublimation works best on light/white polyester. For dark backgrounds or cotton, woven or other printed methods are better.
