Hang Tags vs. Sewn-In Labels: What’s the Difference (and Do You Need Both)?

Hang tags and sewn-in labels side by side

New brands often ask whether they need hang tags, sewn-in labels, or both. They do different jobs: a sewn-in label lives with the garment for life, while a hang tag is a removable marketing piece at the point of sale. Here’s how they compare and when to use each.

What each one does

  • Sewn-in labels — permanent woven or printed labels at the neck or seam. They carry your brand mark and the legally required care/content info, and stay with the garment forever.
  • Hang tags — removable printed cards attached with string or a barb. They sell the product: price, story, QR code, styling. The customer removes them after purchase.

Main job Branding + required care info Marketing at point of sale

Do you need both?

For retail and direct-to-consumer sales, yes — most brands use both. The sewn-in label handles branding and compliance; the hang tag elevates the unboxing and sells the product on a rack. At minimum you need a sewn-in care/content label to meet labeling requirements; the hang tag is optional but highly recommended for presentation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hang tag required by law?

No. The legally required information (fiber, origin, care, identity) must be on a permanent sewn-in label, not the hang tag.

Can a hang tag replace a sewn-in label?

No — hang tags are removed by the customer, so they can’t carry permanent care/content info.

Should a small brand invest in both?

If you sell at retail or online, both are worth it. Start with a compliant sewn-in label and add hang tags for a polished presentation.
