Custom Clothing Label Size Guide: Standard Dimensions & Placement

Custom woven clothing labels showing different sizes

Getting the size of your custom clothing label right matters as much as the design. Too big and it looks bulky at the neck; too small and your logo gets cramped. This guide covers standard label sizes, how to choose dimensions for your garment, and where each label is placed.

Standard clothing label sizes

There is no single “correct” size, but most brand and care labels fall in these ranges:

Label type Typical size
Neck / brand label (folded) 1" – 2" wide
Care / content label 0.5" – 1" wide, length as needed
Side-seam / hem label 0.5" – 0.75" wide
Waistband label 1.5" – 3" wide
Hang tag 2" x 3.5" (varies widely)

Our online label generator defaults to a 2" x 2" starting size so you can see proportions immediately, then adjust to your garment.

How to choose the right size

  • Match the garment. A chunky knit can carry a larger neck label than a lightweight tee.
  • Account for the fold. An end-fold or center-fold label loses height to the fold — design for the visible area. See our fold types guide.
  • Keep text legible. Don’t shrink a wordmark below comfortable reading size just to fit a small label.
  • Leave a margin. Keep important art away from the very edge so trimming and folding don’t clip it.

Label placement on garments

  • Neck (center back) — the classic brand-label spot on tees, hoodies, and shirts.
  • Side seam — common for care/content labels and a popular minimalist brand placement.
  • Waistband — bottoms, underwear, and activewear; usually a wider label.
  • Sleeve or hem — a subtle external branding touch.

Many brands pair a woven brand label at the neck with a printed care label in the side seam.

Going tagless

If you want to skip a fabric label entirely, tagless heat-transfer labels print your logo and care info directly onto the garment — sized to the printable area rather than a folded tag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common neck label size?

Most woven neck labels are about 1" to 2" wide. The exact size depends on your logo shape and the garment.

How small can text on a label be?

Printed labels reproduce small text better than woven. For woven labels, keep text around 1/16" (1.5mm) or larger so the weave stays legible. We will flag anything too small on your proof.

Do I need different sizes for different garments?

Often yes — a label sized for a heavy hoodie may look oversized on a lightweight tee. We can scale a single design to multiple sizes.
