All woven labels are made by weaving threads into your design — but the weave you choose changes the look, feel, detail, and cost. The three most common woven label types are damask, satin, and taffeta. Here is how they compare so you can pick the right one for your garment.
Damask woven labels
Damask is the highest-quality woven label. It uses a fine, dense weave that captures more detail and small text, with a smooth, soft, almost luxurious hand-feel. Damask labels are reversible and hold intricate logos well.
- Feel: Soft and smooth — gentle against skin.
- Detail: Highest of the three; best for detailed logos and small text.
- Cost: Premium.
- Best for: High-end fashion, premium apparel, brand neck labels.
Satin woven labels
Satin labels use a lustrous polyester thread that is smooth and slightly glossy. They offer good quality and a clean look at a more moderate price than damask, and can be produced on single-needle or broadloom setups depending on the finish you want.
- Feel: Smooth with a soft sheen.
- Detail: Good — clean for most logos.
- Cost: Moderate.
- Best for: Everyday apparel, accessories, brands wanting a polished look on budget.
Taffeta woven labels
Taffeta uses a plain woven polyester thread. It is the most economical option and very durable, but it has a coarser texture — so it is better suited to outerwear, bags, and accessories than to garments worn directly against the skin.
- Feel: Firmer and slightly scratchy — best away from skin.
- Detail: Basic; great for simple logos and text.
- Cost: Lowest.
- Best for: Outerwear, bags, accessories, and budget-conscious runs.
Side-by-side comparison
| Weave | Feel | Detail | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Damask | Softest | Highest | $$$ | Premium apparel |
| Satin | Smooth, glossy | Good | $$ | Everyday apparel |
| Taffeta | Coarser | Basic | $ | Outerwear, bags |
Which weave should you choose?
Choose damask for premium garments and detailed logos where softness matters; satin for a polished look at a moderate price; and taffeta when durability and cost matter more than feel, such as on outerwear or bags.
